My pipes were made by Roderick "Roddy" MacLellan. He is a Glasgow native and one of the world's few master craftsmen who make their pipes by hand, one at a time. Roddy's pipes are known by their unique drone profile and for having a warm, enveloping sound.
My custom set of MacLellan pipes are made of the finest african blackwood. The drones are beautifully flat-combed and have chalice tops. The hand-engraved ferrules and ring caps are bronze. The projecting mounts are moose antler. My drone reeds are by Ryan Canning. (Field Marshal Montgomery Pipes and Drums, N. Ireland)
I play a Colin Kyo chanter with a Shawn Husk reed.
For more intimate, indoor events I play a set of MacLellan Studio Pipes (photo bottom right). These three-drone smallpipes in the key of "Bb" are warm, steady, and a pleasure to listen to in confined areas. They are beautifully crafted in Cocobolo and Satinwood.
